- Tape
- A ruler or measuring tape
- The socks you plan to wear
How to measure foot length for shoe size
- Prepare the floor and paper. Tape a sheet of paper to a hard, level floor so it cannot slide.
- Wear your usual socks. Put on the socks or hosiery you expect to wear with the shoes.
- Stand naturally. Stand with your full weight on the foot and keep the pencil upright.
- Mark heel and longest toe. Mark the back of the heel and the end of the longest toe, or trace the foot.
- Measure the length. Measure the straight-line distance between the two furthest points in centimetres or inches.
- Repeat for the other foot. Measure both feet because one is often slightly longer.
- Use the longer result. Enter the longer measurement in the converter and verify it against the brand chart.
When and how to get an accurate measurement
Measure near the end of the day, when feet may be slightly larger. Stand rather than sit, keep the pencil vertical, and record both feet. If you are between chart rows, follow the brand’s guidance; do not assume the same choice works for every shoe shape.
Foot length is not the same as the inside length of a shoe. Manufacturers add space according to the shoe type and last, so avoid adding an arbitrary allowance before using a chart unless that chart specifically instructs you to.
Convert the measurement to a shoe size
Enter the longer measurement in the shoe size conversion calculator using CM or Inches as the starting system. Choose Men, Women or the appropriate Kids group, then compare the result with the US, UK and EU shoe size chart. For children, use the dedicated kids and toddler shoe size chart.
Length is only one part of fit
Width, instep height, toe-box shape, socks and the shoe’s materials all affect comfort. A conversion is a starting point, not a fit guarantee. If you have persistent pain, swelling or a medical foot concern, seek fitting advice from a qualified professional.
